Tika Cook — Austin-based photographer, actor consultant, and founder of Tika Creations (@tikacreations) — is expressive, infectious, and bursting with laughter and life. She's excellent as a resource for Austin actors — in part because she's been there, done that, appeared on popular TV shows and in print ads. But, as engaging as she is on camera, Tika prefers that behind-the-lens life. On the latest episode of Brainstorm Black, Tika talks about her work, her grand plans for the future, and the unique challenges Black women entrepreneurs in the U.S. face.

Austinites Ariel Marlowe and Brandon “BG” Grant are founding members of the cycling group, the Bottom Bracket Boys. They offer cyclists of all races the chance to learn Black Austin history, while making sure that Black riders are seen, embraced, protected, and supported.

Phyllis Everette was a young mother of three. And, her husband abused her. With her kids in tow, Phyllis mustered up the courage to flee. Many days were a struggle to survive. Today, Phyllis is the successful Founder and CEO of Saffron Trust Women's Foundation which works to end generational poverty while helping mothers who are facing hard times not only survive, but thrive. Here, Phyllis tells us her story, and explains how she's helping women design their destiny.

This 2023 National Endowment of the Arts Fellow strives to impact and encourage other people in the queer/trans community who may be struggling with identity.
